I'd hate to complain at this time in the evening, but after reading this, I'm sure that complaining a whole heap would help with the smooth running of things.
So, as I slowly twist the elongated clip of a pen's lid, I must admit that most of the rules of this site are fair and maintain the quality many users have achieved to produce. However, despite the already known few who disobey these rules, I have found a new louse in their system.
And I quote, from a so-called "fan fiction" website;
"Entries not allowed:I am fine with the Q&A, the second person based, but really? Banning the fan-based "choose your own adventure" story does contradict the whole "everyone friendly, ff website" vibe that I keep on getting from the webpage.
5. Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc."
I'm not really sure, maybe I'm looking at things through a very powerful magnifier, and picking out the slightest fault, but really, this is just my opinion the website's rules and regulations. I have a problem with this, since I am a huge fan of a "form your own path" kind of tale. I find that it provides a worth-while, unique experience for the reader, whoever it may be, and requires a lot of skill and effort to be used into creating one.
Unfortunately, there aren't many places for these kinds of things, and they are not common to find. The closest to one of these would be a role-playing game, or a WWYFF (who would you fall for) quiz from Quizilla. It is quite sad really, that I pose a question as to how a website can define the term "fanfic".
I have googled a more official definition of these words, and found something from Dictionary.com:
Main Entry: | fan fiction |
Part of Speech: | n |
Definition: | a fictional account written by a fan of a show, movie, book, or video game to explore themes and ideas that will not or cannot be explored via the originating medium; also written fan fiction, also called fanfic |
How can a choose your own adventure story not fit with this sort of definition? It is something that cannot be achieved through the "originating medium" and it can "explore themes and ideas", but it is through a different process from how a "normal" story is made. Is it just because the makers of the site do not count this as a narrative of some sort? I ask those who are willing to read with patience and understanding: why? Is it something like preferring the colour blue to the colour red, or, preferring a touch screen to a QWERTY keyboard phone? Is it because the creators prefer one specific genre of a story over another, and thus forbid many from making it, and thus preventing those, like myself, to enjoy its style?
It is something I struggle to understand, since I am not in hold of a FanFiction.net account, and do not understand things as well as I might've. So I pose the above questions to you, my readers; to you, who own the accounts; and to you, who hold an opinion on such things.
Also, I would like to give advice to those who claim to "report" things that go against the guidelines. I know that you believe that you are just doing the "right thing", but please don't sound so antagonistic when you do so. I'm sure that most people will feel very hurt by the rude and brisk manner of your speech, for surely they are the type of person that has the same amount of good intention as you do. Try to say things like, "I am sorry to inform you that your post violates the regulations of this website", not "you're an idiot for not sticking to the rules, so I'll just report your ass and get your log-in suspended". Be decent.
I must admit though, this is quite on a whim, since I was just curious to see these pages after much grasshopping around. And to say, I am still curious to see what you think of the rules of the website. Honestly, I would much appreciate it if the admins will modify the guidelines slightly so that they can allow choose your own stories to be entered into their archives without making it feel like people are selling something at the Black Market. But if they don't, I would like to ask someone to create a html for choose your own adventure stories, or a large pooling of many genres of stories including that particular one.
Thank you.
From yours truly,
Wuv,
SSV
